Pit Bulls - They are NOT your friends

Okay. So pit bulls may not always kill their prey. Instead of going for the kill, they just might chew off arms, grab hunks out of a head, take bites out of a face, or chomp fingers and toes.

Yes, pit bulls are not the kind of dog that you want to own. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not a dog hater. In fact, my family has had a dog since I was an infant (Which by the way was more than a couple of decades ago), and one of our first wedding anniversary presents from our first Scottish Terrier.

But pit bulls are not family pets. They often 'turn' on their owners or attack neighbors, passer-bys, or family visitors. A pit bull can not be trusted, no matter how domesticated or loved.

A recent example is the tragic story in Atlanta of two pit bulls that attacked an 8 year old girl, literally eating her arm. Nothing or no one could stop that dogs during the attack. Nothing that is until a police officer shot one of the dogs.

Last week a jury found the two dogs' owner Twyann Vaughn guilty of six misdemeanors, including reckless conduct and owning a vicious dog. The woman, who often cried during her trial, was sentenced to 16 months in jail and three years on probation. (If you're up to it, watch this chilling testimony from the trial and listen to a recording of the dogs' attack.)

If this isn't enough to convince you that pit bulls are not owner-friendly, check out this list of eye-witness reports.

  1. Where we live, It is against city ordinance to own pit bulls and other dangerous dogs. A bidder, for the building we bought, dropped out because he could not bring his two pit bulls with him.

    4. Pit Bulls are not to blame. It's the owner that is in the fault. If the owner is training the pit as a fighter, the dog will bite and fight. If the owner trains the pit a a fun-loving animal, it will not unless it feels threatened. The governments are more worried about animals when its the humans who are killing. I understand not wanting to kill our kind, but why make pit bulls extinct? Why not humans? By the way, i'm 12. And I do own a pit bull. My dog saved my life MORE than 1 time. I am greatful for Morgana la fey. (:

    5. Have been around numerous pitbulls, including a girl I went to college with, being first time her pitbull met me and was super friendly as were all the others, your opinion that you are pushing on others is completely uneducated, and your comment on goats; how about we exterminate all coyotes and moutain lions as they kill plenty of goats and calves each year, since there is a lack of hunters coyotes have been attacking people in urban areas such as california etc, but I am getting off point, it is the idiots who train and or treat the dog to be vicious that makes them that way, you can have vicious german shepards, boxers, golden retrievers etc. Also goats are often mean and could have easily killed the 3 year old, what was 3 year old doing around goats unsupervised and maybe the dog thought the goats were a threat to the 3 year old and was protecting it from harm as a good dog would I have had way more issues with the smaller dogs, and why yes they dont have the same bite as a bigger dog it can still be pretty devastating to a baby or toddler. Your logic isnt any different than saying a certain race or class is more responsible for crime than another so we should get rid of that race or class, your just being as racist, just using a different species than humans. Racism is ignorance and your displaying greatly, I would be so proud if I were you.

I have pitbulls of my own, and im not gonna lie when we first got them i was skeptical bit now i know that these dogs are like family.they love you and will protect you.

You need to open up and see that pitbulls are loving dogs that just want the same attention as any other dog would want! This gets me so angry because i had a pitbull and she was the sweetest dog in the world unfortunty she passed away... But you need respect them just as well. What if it wa the opposite way you were a pit? Yeah, you wouldnt want to be treated like that and want them to die!

  2. I don't understand your ignorance. I havge owned Pitbulls all my life and have never had a incident of any violence. I have been bitten by several small dogs. Any dog will be aggressive if not treated properly and throughout time many dogs have been the victime of unjust publicity.I feel that anyone who discriminates on Pitbull breeds should research the real facts and not just look for the negative information.

    1. Yes, Anonymous, little dogs can be vicious too. But you don't read too often about a Dachshund or West Highland terrier killing a child or an adult.

Recently, a friend of mine witnessed a dog that was part pit full ravagely attack and kill two pet goats. The dogs had gotten into a fenced in area and viciously went after the goats. Just minutes before a 3 year old had been playing in that area. What would have happened to that little boy if it were he in the yard when the dogs attacked? And again, I don't see a killer Westie maiming or killing a goat or a child.

It does matter who the owners are etc, every dog isn't perfect as well as every human isn't either. No matter the breed or the human its nature attacks will happen but pitbulls always get picked on and are the center when they do wrong thats why you mainly hear about them more and not other dogs. You can find any bad information on anyone or anything when your looking for it. So sick of seeing this crap against these beautiful loving dogs. People need to stop mistreating them and having/raising them for the wrong reasons.

I sleep quite well, thank you. I did have nightmares for many nights after seeing my neighbor's 5 year old son whose ear had been ripped off by a pit bull.

The little boy was visiting friends when the dog attacked. Yes, I know that dogs other than pit bulls do attack and can even kill. Unfortunately, pit bulls are the ones that seem to make the news and I have seen first hand the damage one can do.

Perhaps if I had seen a Scottie dog, Lab or Collie attack a child, I might feel differently.

    2. They are in the media more because of people like you! People who DON'T get their facts straight before posting garbage like this. For a VERY long time, they were the number one family dog in America until they started getting called aggressive because of dog fighting. And whiose fault is that? Criminals. Because they started forcing this naturally gentle breed into fighting because they have the muscle to do it, they get all this bad attention. It is in no way the fault of the dog, or the breed. THey are so willing to please their owners, they will do anything. Pitbulls have recieved award all over the country for heroism, more so than any other breed. People like you with no experience with multiple breeds read about the dog attacks and form these absurd opinions about the dogs. You discriminate against these dogs without trying to know them. I've met some bad pits, but many more great, wonderful, affecionate pits. I think of all the aggressive dogs ive experienced over the years (and I've worked with THOUSANDS) pit bulls ahve been the least of my worries. Children are 600 times more likely to get killed by their very own caretakers than a pitbull. 600!

Unfortunately, the pit bull has a 'killer' reputation that my Scottie just doesn't have. And according to a CDC report on deaths by dog attacks, the pit bull was attributed to the most deaths. Stats such as that and news articles publishing vicious dog attacks do not help the pit bull's image. See http://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/images/dogbreeds-a.pdf

  8. Just received an email from a friend of mine who lives in the Midwest with a tale of a not-so-good pit bull. Wanted to share his tale...

You will not be pleased to hear the latest news…

There is a pit bull over in Wichita that escapes his fenced yard and attacks other dogs. He has been captured several times by animal control. He finally killed another dog. The animal control declared him dangerous and scheduled him to be put down.

Concerned citizens rallied around the dog and saved him. Now he will be "retrained" and put up for adoption by a new family.

This story appeared about the same time as the one where the family pet killed the three day old infant...

That pit was my best friend and only friend as a kid, and hes dead now and i see that scottie walk down the street everyday, which would not be happening if i hadnt been the bigger person (AT AGE 7 FOR GODS SAKE) and had called animal control and had him put down.

  10. Pit bulls can be the most loving dogs in the world. It just Matters on how they were raised

    ReplyDelete
  11. There is merit to both sides in this argument. A well trained, and well loved pitt can be an amazing dog. Quite commonly though, they are not trained correctly to counter their agressive natures. Unfortunately pitts were bred to bait large animals, they are designed to attack and hold on. After animal baiting was outlawed, dog fighting became a common use for them. Owners of fighting dogs bred in the characteristics that they wanted in their fighters, agility, speed, strength and agression. While many other types of dog can be agressive, it is less common simply because of their design (and yes, most dogs are designed by the breeders). Also you hear more about pitts because when things do go wrong, they are so much more efficient at attacking, again because of their design. Please dont get me wrong, I really like pitts, I think they are beautiful and happy and loving for the most part, but the facts and realities stand. I would love to see pitts bred out to adjust their basic natures, but while that happens as a whole, we are left with a lot of pitts without homes.

  12. Was at the 4th of July Parade in Dahlonega yesterday and stood beside a beautiful pit bull. The dog was well behaved and loving to his owner and children. He was even friendly to those people who stopped to admire him.

He was a big animal, however. Having seen dogs that were family pets suddenly 'turn on owners', owning a pit bull just makes me nervous. We had a small dachshund who was so despondent over my father's death, that the dog turned violent and attacked my 70 year old mother, cornering her in a corner. So, dogs can turn vicious. Unfortunately, based on CDC studies and news coverage, pit bulls tend to hurt and maim more people then dachshunds.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. News coverage, get a clue, they are looking for ratings and rarely report facts, often biased, they wouldn't get much attention saying dachshund bit someone. Plus by some chance perhaps they have an agenda and want to give the dog a bad name, funny how I have been around so many and never had one issue. Do they also report when there is an attack what happened before, was it someone that trained the dog to be vicious...not dogs fault, was it someone teasing and provoking the dog, perhaps throwing stuff at it, barking, maybe poking and prodding, again not dogs fault. Another issue with dog owners is they do not know how to handle the dog, basically be the one in charge as the owner and make the dog behave, so they have a dog that runs wild. They should not own pets in the first place if they do not know how to handle them.

  15. You've provided some great links for people to learn more about dog fighting and pit bulls. As for my documentation, you'll note that this blog references real life news stories about pit bull attacks. I saw a neighbor's 5 year old child whose face and ear had been mauled when a family pit bull rushed the child, knocked him down and bit the boy's face. The boy's father intervened or the attack could have been worse. Could this have happened with another breed? Maybe. I just know that my three year old scottie just licks the neighbors' children. Not bite.

    1. There was a case where a ladies face was mauled off by a labrador retriever where she needed a face transplant, also child face mauled from golden retriever, use common sense which apparently you dont have and gather that it is the owner of the dog generally who is at fault or someone teasing and provoking the animal.

    2. Have you ever noticed that the people who are against pitbulls have usually never owned one... They have only heard the horror stories. It's not fair to blame the whole breed on only a few dogs behaviors! And to That story about the pitbull that bit off a boys ear, What did that boy do to provoke the dogs actions? And how about the parents? Were were they? You people who are against this breed don't really think about what could happen if a dog owner was smart and got the pitbull at a young age and raised it around kids do you? No, instead you guys go around with the courage to hold your head up and prance around and talk about the breed as if you know something! That disgusts me! I have a pitbull that wouldn't hurt a fly! Yes he is capable of hurting and maybe killing, but my point is, is that he does not! So, for those " haters" I would just like to say, stop complaining about something you will never truly understand!

A blog is, according to Merriam Webster's, "a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer." Note please those words in the definition - "personal journal with reflection,comments...by the writer."

As a former journalist and college journalism instructor, I do know the ethics of journalism and decidedly know the difference between a 'news' article and an 'opinion piece,' which a blog and THIS blog is.

  19. You will never be able to give an account of EVERY event that happens. Many dog attacks go undocumented. The sad truth is, pitbulls are not the only thing being attacked, the people who own them are as well. Society tells you to get a labrador or golden retriever because they are "socially acceptable" according to the media. When you decide to own a pitbull you have just canceled yourself from being politically correct in society. The attack on pitbulls is not just about the dog, it is about attacking the culture in which the dogs were created.

  22. First of all pitbulls are actually really loving animals. The only way they become mean is if you teach them to be mean. I've had two pitbulls and they were do loving and playful. So the owners should be in trouble for treating their animals wrongs, not the dogs.

  23. This is complete and utter bullshit. This is a beautiful and loving breed, if you think so otherwise, please tell that to my 121lb pit king, 5lb yorkie mix, and 9 month old niece, in which every night, if king is not with her, he cries like a big baby. Your argument is invalid, considering everything they ate trying to do to the pit bull breed, they've tried with dobermans and even german shepherds. Every dog can turn, and personally, if you wanna talk about a "vicious breed" talk about the little rats with hair. The only reason you heart more about pitbulls is because media wants to scare and most people are to ignorant to see this, that it picks and chooses what it wants to show. I'm 16, I suspect you're are well older than I am, so open you eyes and stop being so damn ignorant.

  24. Pitbulls are not a vicious breed of dog. They have a bad rep because of the Jaw muscle that almost surrounds their entire head, which does give a powerful bite, and because of how they were raised by an owner. Yes this breed of dog is meant to go in Pits and fight, but only because the owner of them, trained them and probably physically abused and neglects the dog. Naturally, these dogs are cute, adorable, loveable, sweet and innocent breeds. Any dog in fact any animal and even human could act violent because of being neglected, physically and mentally abused by someone. It's how their mind is set after a major and/or life changing incident. Would you blame the whole human population if someone harmed another? So why blame pitbulls from their past and how ignorant and stupid people treat them...please do not be a hypocrite or mix my words up. It's idiotic of how people think these majestic dogs are naturally violent, I happen to own a blue pit myself, and he's such a sweet dog. Trust me, pitbulls or any fighting dogs are not dangerous...all animals have an instinct to protect themselves if they feel in danger, so really the animal is protecting themselves from the danger that surround them, just because they do not want that treatment to happen again. And besides if you consider pitbulls to be dangerous, then bulldogs, mastiffs, horses, cows, bulls...etc. or considered dangerous to you, even humans...because we are animals and are thought (and know) go to defend and fight to protect ourselves incase an danger brews up.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can't believe people are continuing to spread this kind of ignorance. You cited one instance of an attack by pitbulls and that means the entire breed is bad? There was a story on the news today that a black man shot someone for no reason, should we ban all of them too? I know sounds ridiculous doesn't it. Exactly like your article. If you don't want a pitbull then don't get one. Leave the responsible dog owners alone.

  26. Regardless of your view on pit bulls, I cannot take anyone seriously that starts their argument with "I have a pit bull..." or "My aunt has two pit bulls and...". NO. That is not factual research, that is water cooler chit-chat. That is the exception, not the rule and it is not logic. Additionally, the "it's how they were raised" argument has clearly been disproved by the countless incidents where a family pit bull has attacked a member of the family. I highly doubt any pit bull was trained to kill an infant, yet it's happened. They love the dog and treat it with respect, yet there are still attacks. Why? Why was this particular breed once used to bait bears? There is a reason. Use your noggin people.

Just once I wish someone would admit that maybe these dogs do have a tendency to be a bit more violent than other breeds, but that you're willing to take that risk because you love the breed. That's a statement I can respect more than any story you can tell me about your neighor's sister's friend's pit bull.

  27. How can you sit there, and say Pitbulls are not a dog someone wants to own? I would LOVE to own one. You say they won't kill there "pray" but will chew OFF there arms and legs? What the fuck do you think these dogs are? Wolves? Your information is very false, and you should be a shame to even be, a so called, writer.

How many, people do YOU know that have been bit by a Pitbull? Please, I see more aggressive Golden Retriever then Pitbulls. But, if a German Shepherd was to go and bit someone, that breed, it would be forgiven right? But no, not Pitbulls, there demons dogs, dogs from Satin himself, right?

WRONG, do obviously didn't do much information, or you just reading the book by its cover, or from what you hear on the media, news, read on the internet, how often do you really hear good news? Hardly ever.

Let me give you a really quick history of the breed, shall we?

Pitbulls, as of a study on 2010-2011 have a better temperament, then over 121 other breed of dogs. Above German Shepherd.

That can be read here: http://www.ywgrossman.com/newblog/?p=408

Did you also know, Pitbull were bred for FAMILY dogs, there loyal, and most pitbulls, who have been through the worst, bonce back to be loyal, and more loving? No, you wouldn't because your a pathetic prick who knows nothing about the breed.

    Lets continue shall we?

Because, Pitbulls are so, horrible, vicious, DANGEROUS! (Yeah right...) Only 1, out of 600 will find a loving home, most will be abandoned, or sent to a shelter, and most shelters will put down Pitbulls (EVEN PUPPIES!) on the post. Because there so called "Dangerous".

How can you tell me its the dog fault? But its not the humans? If its anyone fault, its the humans! We TEACH our dogs how to behave. Just as we teach our children, if a child does wrong its the parents fault, if a Pitbull does wrong, its its fault, when it is only doing as its taught!

There is also this thing, its called inbred. It is where, a dog, has mates with its own parent, which, can cause temper problems, on top of other problems for the dog, just as it would with humans. Which is why, you have to be careful who you buy you dog from.

Humans kill, and we blame it on mental disability, but the dogs, they know what there doing, that breed is just a bad breed. Well you know what, were a horrible species, and I hate humanoids, and I hate what humans do.

I would trust a pPtbull, before I would trust most humans.

So Diane Bates (Person who posted blog) You tell me, how much do you ACTUALLY know about the breed? Other then what you hear? Obviously nothing, your article made me sick, and you are just like any other judgmental prick out there in this world. How would you feel if someone was to judge you? Or spread rumors about you?

You wouldn't would you? Well, now you know how those poor dogs feel.

You're a down life, very ignorant person, and you should be a shamed of yourself.

  29. This is BS . don't judge all Pitbull Breeds on Just One Pitbulls action . They are all different in their own way as well as raised differently and are one individual . these facts you say about pitbulls not being a family pet , is untrue in so many different ways. and can be proven wrong .

  30. I have been around pit bulls all my life. I rode and slept on my parents pit bulls. These dogs were revered as family pets all through WW1 and beyond. They were on posters as "the" epitome of an American dog. I have been bit by numerous breeds of dogs(labs being on top of the list) and the 1 and only time i got bit by a pit. It was a starving and scared stray that i rescued. I immediately adopted the dog, nursed it back to health and she now spends her time visiting nursing homes and being picked on by kids at the local daycare center. Never once has she growled at any of the kids and she jumps into bed and takes naps with the elderly.

Pit bulls can be aggressive, but so can labs, huskies, and any other breed. I will never understand how people that have never been around a pit in their life can assume anything, nor do i feel that they have the right to speak ill of these animals.

We as humans kill more people everyday than dogs do every year. So if you want something to scrutinize and belittle, LOOK IN THE MIRROR!!!! Leave these dogs alone and they will leave you alone.

  31. I was definitely skeptical about pit bulls when we rescued our first pit bull but I quickly fell in love with the dog and shortly after that we adopted another pit bull. These dogs are amazing and they act according to how they were raised. I have been bit by two dogs in my life, a German Shepard and a Scottish terrier so you should stop with the one way thinking because pit bulls are not the reason for this, it's the owners.

I have many pit bulls and they are my friends but a docile breed and it is only necessary to educate and not get too flustered doo is pretty fellow he is and I do not believe that the people who believe in certain history, people or invent or do the puppy get angry but this is something he is not, that is the same as judging the book by its cover
